The Mothership
Eat, Sleep, Travel in Style
The Island C is an 80-foot, multi-engine, house forward vessel of steel construction, used exclusively by Geographic Marine Expeditions for our Alaska voyages. Her heavy plating and close framing make her an ideal vessel for North Pacific waters. At the same time, she is a beautiful boat with classic lines and a stately presence. Since 2007, her primary mission has been oceanographic research which is reflected in her commercial-gear, functional layout, and crewing.
Two is Better
Island C holds the Coast Guard’s official Oceanographic Research Vessel (ORV) designation, and the highest safety rating available to commercial vessels of her class. In addition to her heavy plating, Island C boasts excellent maneuverability, station keeping, and outright safety offered by a twin-screw vessel. This redundancy is reflected throughout the architecture of the boat with dual systems in place for every critical function of vessel operations.
See it All
The wrap-around flying bridge is excellent for wildlife viewing and provides 360-degree views from an ideal viewing height. We maintain a comprehensive inventory of field guides and optics for our guests.
Getting Ashore
To support small boat operations, Island C has a gated opening on its port side. This opening is flush to the deck surface for safe access to small craft and docks, providing easy embarkation for guests. We also have a large swim deck spanning the entire transom of the boat, which is an additional support to small craft. Guests will be delivered to shore via our custom-built, 20′ landing craft.
Dining
Our Chefs have got us covered! Food is definitely a highlight of the small cruise experience. Our frequent air support offers the opportunity to keep things fresh with new delicacies brought in on every port call and support flight. Dietary restrictions? No problem. We’ll be asking about any needs you have before the trip begins. Meals are nutritious and well-balanced. They typically incorporate local greens and wild-caught Alaskan seafood.
The food on board was outstanding and Chef Ayesha cooked up five star meals three times a day that included salmon, black cod, incredible seafood chowders, and even eggs benedict with salmon. And don’t get me started on the fabulous desserts.

Space for You and Your Gear
Our large staterooms, luxurious salon, and spacious topside decks offer you the chance to spread out and relax after an active day. We sail with up to sixteen crew for research expeditions. But in Katmai, eight guests seems about right to increase personal space, maximize individual attention, and minimize our impact in this incredible place. After all, you’re here to escape the crowds, not join one
Staterooms
Island C has four unique staterooms, each one immaculately clean and thoughtfully appointed. The Kayak Room, located forward, has a private bathroom and shower, and can be reserved for an additional fee.
